Official announcement of my appointment to an endowed chair at the University of Notre Dame, as the Mirza Family Professor of Islamic Thought and Muslim Societies in this notification.Very pleased about this outcome. Thanks to Susan Scribner Mirza, a Notre Dame alumna who made a generous donation to the Keough School in memory of her husband Muzaffar Mirza, a Pakistani American.
Some of my friends have asked me what does an endowed chair mean? Well, it is a recognition of one’s scholarship and academic contribution in the field by one’s peers and one’s institution. It also means that dedicated funds for the chair and professorship ensures the teaching of this area of specialty in perpetuity. There are some perks in normal conditions such as additional research funds. In the current depressed conditions of all university endowments I am not sure what this will mean, but I am sure we will see better times, God willing.
