Is there a position of “chaplain” in the Islamic tradition (perhaps an Arabic word here?) or is a Muslim chaplain a response by the Muslim community to the Western institutions of military, incarceration and health care systems?
There is no historical notion of chaplain, but it seems that an imam if properly trained can do the same function as a chaplain.
